Theory of Operation:
The Secure-A-Key is a device that helps to prevent a Relay Attack on a vehicle. The device wraps around the coin cell battery in a vehicle’s KEYFOB. It works by disconnecting power to the KEYFOB if the keyfob is stationary for a set period. For example, if the KEYFOB is on a table near your front door etc.
Once motion is detected (pick up the key) the Secure-A-Key wakes up and reconnects power to the keyfob.
Wireless keys: matchbox-sized fobs that have proven woefully susceptible to what’s known as relay attacks. That’s when thieves use two relay devices that can receive, and extending, wireless signals from the car through walls, doors and windows, to reach the FOB inside a car owner’s house. The relay devices are cheap to pick up online.
Standing next to the car, they just must scan for signals transmitted by the wireless keys and then amplify them to open the cars, hop in and drive off.

Key point mentioned was “researchers say they can perform the attack far more cheaply than those predecessors, spending just $225 on their attack device compared with the multi-thousand-dollar software-defined radios used in the Swiss researchers’ study. They’ve also tested a larger array of vehicles and, unlike the earlier study, released the specific makes and models of which vehicles were susceptible to the attack; they believe that hundreds of thousands of vehicles in driveways and parking lots today remain open to the wireless theft method”.
As per Lisa Vaas they got good results from the Audi E-Tron, Jaguar XE, Range Rover Evoque and Mercedes-Benz B-Class: cars with wireless fobs that resist the attacks by either using more secure wireless technology or by going to sleep when they haven’t been used for a set time. The secure-a-key works by breaking the communication chain between the vehicle and the key fob. If the key fob cannot respond to a request from the vehicle, a relay attack is impossible. The device is installed into the factory key fob and disconnects the battery after a few minutes of inactivity. Secure-a-key reconnects the key fob battery as soon as movement is detected, allowing the factory passive keyless entry and push-to-start system to function as designed.
