September 7th, 2017 Update:
Below is the 2nd iteration of adjustable white light from 2000K to 5500K targeted to meet 95% of CRI index using Yuji LED’s. Once this design prototype is validated for functionality will move towards production intent design prototype.
The earlier prototype lighting intensity was 40 Lumens which is enough for Automotive Dome Lights but too low for interior reading lamps. Want to validate design where LED intensity can be 40 Lumens for Automotive and 400 Lumens for desk reading lamp.
As per the circuit diagram initial PCBA samples developed with 6 Yuji LED’s on each circuit with help from Microchip. Current design is to validate lighting intensity and only has a selector switch to select LED color – from 2000K to 5500K.
All 6 LED’s are designed to meet 95% of natural light CRI Index.
Final design will incorporate a dimmer and ON / OFF button.
The other prototype being developed with OSRAM will use 12v power input using common adaptor available from Amazon / eBay and others as below.
The key target is that intensity should be 400 to 500 Lumens so can demonstrate adjustable white lite solution as good fit both for home and auto interior.
Yuji LED Circuit Design as Developed by Microchip for Settings
2000K to 5500K
Below is base reference design for LED’s from Yuji LED – https://www.yujiintl.com/about.
The circuit design developed has been kept very simple for initial concept validation working with Microchip Electronics.
Design HMI Next Generation Dome Lamp for Auto and Home with Smart Color Tuning Light Module offering you the to White Light color temperature that best suits your needs or time of day.
White Light Color Tuning from Warm (1800K) to Cold (6500K) with dimming capability. Target 95% of Natural Light Spectrum to provide illumination based on natural light and adjustable to time of day and different interior fabric / trim color renderings.
For the last three to four years Design HMI LLC has been investigating adjustable white light for car interiors and homes targeted to 95% of natural light CRI Index. Lumenetix has been developing tunable white light for commercial applications for some years. Design HMI LLC, in collaboration with OSRAM and MICROCHIP is working to develop solution suited for Automotive Interiors and Home usage.
Smart Color Tuning Light Module offering you White Light color temperature that best suits your needs or time of day. Also designed to highlight in car trim and / or home interior color selection.
White Light Color Tuning from Warm (2000K) to Cold (5500K) with dimming capability. Target 95% of Natural Light Spectrum to provide illumination based on natural light and adjustable to time of day and different interior fabric / trim color renderings.
As you know light perceived as yellowish with color temperature of around 2700K; at color temperature of 3000K – 3500K it appears less yellow and more white. At color temperature of 5000K or higher the light produced appears bluish white.
At 2700-2800K desired lighting effect is “warm” and temperatures above 5000K simulate Daylight
Some customers may prefer warm lights and others colder white color – preference is also based on interior choices. In some hotels you can already mood lighting with touch of an iPad or via control switch on the wall. This feature is already provided to control RGB Ambient Lighting in cars.
The other design deliverable is to develop LED lighting that which mimics natural sunlight as much as commercially viable – 95% of the CRI Index which is measure of the ability of a light source to reproduce colors of various objects compared to an ideal light source. On scale 0-100 lights closer to 100 have an ability to show truer colors.
Per recent WSJ Article as quote on ‘ How to Bring the Sun Indoors’ researchers are looking at how dialing up and down the brightness, color and richness of household lighting can help regulate our circadian rhythms. These rhythms—the mental and behavioral changes that occur in response mostly to light cues over each 24-hour period—affect hormone releases, body temperature and the sleep-wake cycle, according to the National Institutes of Health. Studies have connected circadian-rhythm disruptions with obesity, depression and diabetes. Better lighting also lifts our moods and improves our quality of life, researchers say.
The final design is to integrate component technology with solid state electronics in conjunction with latest in light guide technology and materials – like those from DOW Silicones.
Will have more information as the design progresses. For more information on natural light in commercial applications please click http://www.lumenetix.com/
Another potential application is Headlights Temperature Adjust White Headlights Meeting 95% Natural Light CRI Index
Adjustable White Color Headlight lighting color temperature from 2000K to 6500K that meets 95% of Natural Light CRI Index
Ledzworld has developed MR16 Chameleon LED lamp with CRI of 98. CRI (color rendering index) is a measure of how accurately a light source illuminate’s objects’ true colors. With CRI values of up to 98 LED lights are able to produce white light that approximates halogen or incandescent lighting and natural daylight.
The near perfect CRI ensures Ledzworld’s new MR16 lamps render objects naturally making them an ideal choice for efficiently illuminating retail stores, restaurants, hotels, museums, art galleries, and homes.
With their Chameleon driver and Color Temperature Adjustment (CTA) 2.0 technology.” The lamps will be available in a variety of beam angles including a very narrow spot-beam often requested for retail store applications. 10°, 25°, 40° and 60° are standard and customizations are available upon request.
The company’s innovative Chameleon driver is a technological breakthrough that adjusts itself to its environment by first detecting the transformer type, then analyzing its waveform and finally adjusting itself to make a perfect electrical fit with that particular transformer. This feature makes the MR16 Chameleon retrofit lamps truly “plug and play” devices that can be used in a wide variety of the possible combinations of commonly used drivers and dimmers
Utilizing Ledzworld’s CTA 2.0 technology, the high CRI LED MR16 Chameleon lamp perfectly emulates the color tones of halogens when dimmed. www.ledzworld.com.
The other company is Yuji (http://www.yujiintl.com/high-cri-led-lighting) which began producing LED phosphor material in 2006. They focused on red phosphor technology, a necessary addition to any LED phosphor recipe for high CRI and/or low CCT, which at the time represented a small, yet rapidly growing market opportunity.
