With the complexity of external sensors increasing control system needs assurance that calibrations have not been modified. Electronic Control Units may also need to authenticate external sensors. Proposed here are two microprocessor-based solutions that may address these needs.
Both solutions are low complexity solutions designed to record and provide information to the owner and potentially manufacturer on OBD has been potentially accessed.
These simple solutions can also be used on other control modules.
1). Wire Harness Based Solution: This is Microchip based design solution using SDLC 24-Way connector disconnect detection.
2). Through Security Algorithm: This is designed to prevent communication without permission through the OBD. Idea is to use security algorithm that is based on the Vehicle Frame NO. (VIN).
The design concept as developed by Hirain Technologies is as below:
- Inset the security chip into the OBD connector to prevent access.
- OEM will download the code into the chip when finish the car production.
- When use automotive diagnosis equipment to read the OBD signal, should input the VIN and then unlock the chip.
- In this solution, the OEM can control security algorithm which is based on the VIN, and no one else can access the vehicle bus through the OBD.
- The OEM should design the automotive diagnosis equipment themselves.
