Radial Keyboard – Optimized Layout

BeeRaider’s Radial Keyboard has been designed to address the shortcomings of the QWERTY keyboard.

In order to meet the goal of minimizing finger-travel time, the circle was adopted as the basis for the design of the Radial Keyboard. Several concentric circles containing as many keys as required to accommodate the full US QWERTY keyboard (with a few ancillary keys (not shown) were used for this purpose.

The Radial Keyboard design has a logical more efficient ergonomic layout with a familiar user-friendly bee outline that anyone can readily relate to.

 

In general, the sequences of graphics which follow show the most-to-least frequently occurring alpha-characters on the Optimized Radial Keyboard. This approach to the layout of the alpha-characters on the Optimized Radial Keyboard reduces finger-travel-time and may also help prevent repetitive strain injuries (RSI) developing.

 

There are two space-keys on the physical keyboard as shown. The green and blue dotted character-selection sticky-keys are arranged either side of the bottom space-key. Along with the standard shift-key shown on the left beneath the central space-key, a sticky-shift-key is included on the right of it. The two additional sticky selection-keys mostly operate in combination with characters that were previously selected using the standard shift-key. Sticky keys facilitate faster data-entry and the three bottom keys are designed to be easily operated by the thumbs.

The surface area of the keycaps is bigger for those keycaps located along the wings. This provides the weaker less agile fingers with larger target areas to strike and thereby encourages the user to use these fingers more when typing. This approach matches the most used characters to the most agile fingers and continues in that vein to accommodate all fingers so as to facilitate increased

data-entry speed. Together with the larger keycaps that provide for improved data-entry accuracy, the design also achieves better overall ergonomics and may prevent RSI developing.

Conclusion

The Radial Keyboard design is primarily aimed at the untrained computer keyboard user, which would be the vast majority of keyboard users today. Its logical, ergonomic and efficient design offers these users the means by which they can greatly improve their typing speed and productivity over a relatively short period of time. If they further apply themselves, we believe it will also facilitate them in becoming their own self-taught touch-typist. This would mean that they would no longer need to look at the keyboard when typing.

The Radial Keyboard Design has been designed as a 21st century computer keyboard with none of the shortcomings of the QWERTY standard keyboard design, a design that was contrived for use with the mechanical typewriters of the late 19th century. The Radial Keyboard design is about simplifying the future of data-entry.

The new Radial Keyboard design is being presented as a serious contender to the QWERTY keyboard and other competing alternatives. The case for change has never been stronger with the advent of Digital-Convergence now giving rise to a myriad of ever smaller portable devices. The future is about portability, connectivity and wear-ability. With these changes in mind, it seems rather obvious that the QWERTY keyboard no longer meets the requirements of a modern data-entry device.
